Seven Shopping tips
from Liz

Planned shopping helps you to create a capsule wardrobe. Have a list of tghe items you are watching out for in your wallat or on your phone to keep you on track.

Create a ‘budget’ for larger purchases such as a winter coat or an outfit for a special occasion or a good pair of winter boots. Having this budget in mind keeps us focussed, gives us something to aim towards and often ensures that we actually get to buy these special items.

Stop buying bits and pieces. When you are buying an item, make sure that you already have something to wear with it, or know that you will find something nice to wear with it easily this season. I come across closets full of single items that even I struggle to make into outfits. Why make things difficult for yourself?

Invest in at least one ‘timeless’ item each season, for example gorgeous leather shoes or a beaded beach coverup that you will look forward to packing for your holidays, or a fine wool cardigan to wear through the seasons.

Be adventurous with colour. People get stuck in their own colour rut. It costs nothing to try an outfit on. I suggest to my clients that when they are shopping, they bring an extra outfit into the changing room to try on, perhaps something they wonder would it suit them. Very quickly this develops their eye for the line and fit of clothes and helps them change their style in a positive way. Move outside your comfort zone. You may be surprised.

Keep an eye out for purchases that can give a new lease of life to something you already have in the wardrobe. For instance, a new season scarf can lift a coat to a new level or striking wedge heel boots can give a funkier look to a skirt you have worn before – maybe you can take the skirt up a few centimetres to give it a different look than before.

Just before you pay for something, ask yourself ‘does this item fit in with the overall look of the new style I want to create for myself’. For someone who has shopped with me, I encourage them to ask ‘if Liz was with me, would she encourage me to buy this item?’ This will help you keep on track.
